Requirements
- Ph.D. in a quantitative field or equivalent industry experience.
- 8+ years as an applied scientist with end-to-end ownership of production marketplace or recommendation systems.
- Architected at least one production recsys system from framing to deployment.
- Advanced knowledge of ML techniques: deep learning, learning-to-rank, embeddings, sequence models, causal inference.
- Working experience with modern LLMs and agentic AI development practices.
- Advanced knowledge of probability and statistics.
- Strong coding ability in Python, SQL, and Go.
- Experience building on large-scale distributed systems like Spark and Kafka.
- Track record of external technical contributions: industry publications, patents, or open-source work.
Responsibilities
- Set and drive the multi-year technical roadmap for matching, ranking, and recommendation systems.
- Architect, build, and deploy production AI systems including retrieval, ranking, allocation, and pricing.
- Design and execute marketplace experiments at scale.
- Lead end-to-end on ambiguous, high-impact problems.
- Provide technical mentorship to senior applied scientists.
- Partner with product and engineering leadership to translate strategy into a science investment plan.
- Represent Thumbtack externally through papers and recruiting talks.
