Requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Active law license in good standing in at least one jurisdiction.
  • 7+ years of legal practice at a large firm, fintech, neobank, or bank.
  • Deep expertise in federal and state credit card or personal lending law.
  • Comprehensive understanding of FDCPA, state debt collection law, SCRA, Regulation Z, Regulation B, and UDAAP.
  • Expertise in debt sales regulation, true lender doctrine, bankruptcy law, FCRA, MLA, TCPA, network rules, and AML/BSA and fraud requirements.
  • Strong track record of managing and prioritizing multiple, shifting projects.
  • Independent analytical judgment and strategic decision-making capability.
  • Strong communication skills for briefing frontline teams and senior leadership.
  • Ability to travel approximately once per quarter for 2 to 5 days.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day legal advice on collections, recoveries, and servicing.
  • Negotiate and close contracts with debt sale counterparties, vendors, and technology providers.
  • Track legal and regulatory developments, particularly concerning AI in customer-facing tools, and ensure compliant implementation.
  • Partner with business, Compliance, and Risk teams on new initiatives, consumer communications, and internal process improvements.
  • Anticipate business direction to proactively flag legal risks and opportunities.
