Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in state and local tax (SALT) compliance, including significant experience managing state income tax compliance teams.
  • Deep understanding of state tax concepts, including nexus, state modifications, apportionment, combined reporting, filing methods, elections, PTE tax, and C&I taxation.
  • Strong experience reviewing and delivering complex multistate tax returns.
  • Proven ability to manage client-facing tax engagements and provide technical guidance on complex compliance matters.
  • Experience with state tax technology platforms such as CCH Axcess.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel, data analysis, and tax-related reporting tools.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, budgeting, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities, monitor progress, and ensure successful execution of multiple initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with clients, team members, and firm leadership.
  • Experience identifying business development opportunities and supporting growth initiatives.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence tools and applications in tax or professional services is considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage multiple state and local tax compliance engagements simultaneously, ensuring accurate, timely, and high-quality deliverables.
  • Lead and supervise tax compliance teams, providing guidance, coaching, performance feedback, and professional development support.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by addressing complex tax matters, responding to tax authority notices, and providing representation support when needed.
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge to research, analyze, and communicate solutions for complex multistate tax issues.
  • Manage operational functions for assigned department teams, including workflow planning, resource allocation, budgeting, and performance monitoring.
  • Identify opportunities for business development and contribute to expanding client relationships through strategic initiatives.
  • Build strong client partnerships through effective communication, responsiveness, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service.
  • Collaborate with firm leadership and cross-functional teams to improve processes, service offerings, and operational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate leadership through example by promoting technical excellence, accountability, and a client-focused culture.
  • Provide strategic feedback and recommendations to senior stakeholders to support business objectives.
