Requirements

  • Minimum of three-five years of healthcare experience.
  • Must hold at least one of the following: Physician, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Professional Coder.
  • Proficiency in inpatient coding skills.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport with medical staff.
  • Strong medical surgical background preferred.
  • Experience with utilization management, DRG, billing, auditing, and health care payers preferred.
  • CDIP or CCDS credential preferred.
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and CDI software experience preferred.
  • Regulatory background and DRG reimbursement knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for patient encounters.
  • Translate diagnostic phrases utilized by healthcare providers into coded form.
  • Interact with healthcare providers to ensure accurate translation of medical terms.
  • Assign appropriate DRG codes after concurrent review of medical records.
  • Maintain awareness of Federal and State regulations regarding prospective payment.
  • Perform coding tasks when physician documentation is vague or missing.
