Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree required.
- Active California law license or registered in-house counsel status required.
- Minimum 8 years of experience advising nonprofit tax-exempt organizations.
- Minimum 3 years of experience supervising or leading compliance teams and full-time staff.
- Deep expertise in 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) laws, charitability, and private benefit.
- Authoritative command of federal and state lobbying, political activity, and campaign finance rules.
- Experience translating complex legal requirements into robust compliance policies and systems.
- Strong understanding of Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA) and Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
- Proficiency with Salesforce and MS Office suite is preferred.
- Experience with fiscal sponsorship and grantmaking is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead Tides Legal Compliance and direct the internal assessment program, including setting audit priorities and execution.
- Oversee federal and state corporate registration and reporting obligations, including charitable fundraising and lobbying.
- Develop and maintain legal policies for managing key risks like OFAC, anti-corruption, and KYC functions.
- Oversee the organization's insurance program and risk mitigation strategies.
- Provide expert legal advice on nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax law, charitability determinations, and advocacy-related activities.
- Counsel senior leadership on complex legal questions arising from new program models and partnerships.
- Supervise, develop, and coach the legal compliance team, including hiring and performance management.
