Requirements
- Strong judgment and comfort making calls with imperfect information.
- Demonstrated experience across the full scope of a legal function including contracting, governance, employment, data privacy, and compliance.
- Proven track record of building legal programs from scratch.
- Experience working at a technology or AI organization.
- Comfort using AI legal tools such as Claude for Legal or equivalents.
- Active US bar membership in good standing (nice-to-have).
- Experience in fast-paced startup or high-growth environments (nice-to-have).
- Previous in-house counsel experience (nice-to-have).
- Nonprofit experience, including 501(c)(3) governance and grantmaking compliance (nice-to-have).
- Experience with international entities and transfer pricing (nice-to-have).
Responsibilities
- Partner with leaders to review, advise, and draft contracts for grants, consulting agreements, vendor contracts, compute commitments, and research partnerships.
- Oversee compliance obligations across government, commercial, and grant agreements.
- Develop and maintain internal policies regarding employment, data privacy, and conflicts of interest.
- Support board governance and related-party matters for multiple entity types.
- Partner with the People team on international hiring, visas, contractor agreements, and employment compliance.
- Advise operations on data protection programs and incident response readiness.
- Steward intellectual property ownership, licensing, and protection.
- Contribute to the organization's risk register and recommend mitigations for complex legal challenges.
