Requirements
- Track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives.
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production (ingestion, storage, or query execution).
- Proficiency in Go, or deep experience in other systems languages (Rust, C, C++).
- Strong software craftsmanship with a focus on maintainability and performance.
- Proven experience carrying a pager and operating production services.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to lead through design documentation and collaborative reviews.
- Pragmatic, customer-focused approach to problem-solving.
- Experience in a fully remote, globally distributed team is preferred.
- Familiarity with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems is a bonus.
- Experience with columnar storage formats or SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes is a bonus.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
- Own the architecture of core Tempo components: ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
- Design structured and discoverable APIs for humans and AI agents.
- Drive operational excellence by owning outcomes against concrete SLOs.
- Partner with Product and sibling teams to ship unblocking features.
- Mentor engineers through design feedback, code reviews, and pairing.
- Participate in on-call rotations for services built and maintain a high standard for incident response.
- Engage with the open-source community by reviewing contributions and steering the project.
