Requirements
- Proven track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives.
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
- Expertise in writing clean, robust, and performant software.
- Strong proficiency in Go or deep experience in systems languages such as Rust, C, or C++.
- Operational mindset with experience owning production services and managing SLOs.
- Strong written communication skills for a fully remote, asynchronous environment.
- Ability to break complex problems into short feedback loops and iterative deliverables.
- Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems is a plus.
- Experience with query languages, columnar storage formats, or SaaS infrastructure is a plus.
- Experience building for AI/LLM consumers is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
- Own the architecture of core Tempo components including ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
- Design APIs for humans and agents to ensure reliability for downstream products and integrators.
- Drive operational excellence by meeting SLOs, reducing toil, and improving automation.
- Partner with Product and sibling teams to understand usage and ship features.
- Mentor engineers through code review, design feedback, and pairing.
- Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response and post-incident learning.
- Contribute to open source and engage with the community.
