Requirements
- 3+ years of multi-state payroll processing experience, including California.
- Working knowledge of federal and state employer payroll tax obligations.
- Experience with business license administration.
- Proficiency with a modern HRIS/payroll platform, Rippling experience strongly preferred.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail when handling sensitive compensation data.
- Strong organizational skills to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Preferred: Experience at a multi-state healthcare, clinical, or Series B/C+ startup.
- Preferred: Familiarity with California-specific payroll requirements like final pay timing and PTO payout rules.
- Preferred: FPC or CPP certification, or active pursuit thereof.
Responsibilities
- Process biweekly payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees using Rippling.
- Manage off-cycle payrolls, terminations, and manual adjustments in accordance with state-specific regulations.
- Ensure accurate filing and remittance of federal, state, and local employer payroll taxes.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of business licenses and operating permits across all active states.
- Develop and maintain internal documentation, SOPs, and controls for payroll and licensing workflows.
- Reconcile tax liabilities and resolve tax notices with authorities.
- Support internal and external audits by producing accurate reports.
