Requirements

  • BS in Engineering, preferably electrical with a power focus.
  • 2+ years of experience in substation physical design for electric utilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design tools.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft products, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with substation design standards and practices including IEEE, NESC, and utility specifications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong initiative and leadership qualities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Preferred: Experience leading substation projects modeled in 3D using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with CDEGS for grounding studies and Agi32 for illumination.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the design and preparation of substation physical design drawings.
  • Develop designs for One Line and Three Line diagrams, general arrangements, grounding plans, and conduit details.
  • Perform engineering studies including AC load, illumination, grounding, and lightning shielding.
  • Coordinate with protection & controls, civil/structural, and drafting disciplines to ensure quality deliverables.
  • Support client meetings, technical discussions, and project planning efforts.
  • Participate in site visits and constructability reviews.
  • Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with industry codes such as IEEE, NESC, and NEC.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.
