Requirements

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred or >1 MS) in a hard-science or engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated breadth across multiple natural science fields (e.g., biosecurity, physics, ecology, engineering).
  • 5+ years of relevant research or applied experience running independent projects.
  • Substantive familiarity with adversarial environments and adversarial reasoning.
  • Demonstrated ability to reason carefully about hazards lacking historical data or settled paradigms.
  • Strong publication record or body of work on technological risk, resilience, or detection science.
  • Substantive grounding in modern AI capabilities and trajectories.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong systems thinking and comfort with uncertainty.
  • Self-directed work style with sound judgment for high-leverage problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct structured horizon-scanning for novel AI-enabled hazard classes.
  • Investigate next-generation detection sciences and open-ended emergence approaches.
  • Pursue feasibility analyses on deep resilience and lifeline capacities.
  • Analyze biosphere-scale vulnerabilities and nontraditional environmental toxicology.
  • Identify and advance defensive, stabilizing, and transparency-enhancing technologies.
  • Develop scientific metaresearch on evidence generation and translation.
  • Build scientific coordination capacity through standards and cross-border working relationships.
  • Co-author grant applications and build analytical risk-assessment tools.
