Requirements

  • Professional experience creating lighting for games, real-time projects, or a closely related field.
  • At least one shipped game or comparable professional real-time project.
  • Strong portfolio or reel demonstrating high-quality real-time lighting capabilities.
  • Deep understanding of lighting fundamentals including color, contrast, composition, and visual hierarchy.
  • Professional experience with Unreal Engine or another modern real-time engine.
  • Experience with both dynamic and baked lighting systems, global illumination, and volumetrics.
  • Knowledge of real-time optimization, performance profiling, and platform constraints.
  • Experience taking ownership of lighting for a level, scene, or comparable area of production.
  • Ability to review the work of other artists and provide clear, constructive feedback.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to balance artistic quality with technical limitations and production deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality real-time lighting for gameplay environments, levels, cinematics, and interactive sequences.
  • Translate art direction, concept art, and gameplay requirements into effective lighting solutions that establish mood and player focus.
  • Oversee lighting work for assigned areas and review contributions from other artists to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback through reviews, paintovers, and documentation.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level artists in lighting fundamentals, technical execution, and production practices.
  • Partner with Technical Art and Engineering teams to optimize lighting for performance budgets and platform constraints.
  • Coordinate with environment, VFX, and design teams to ensure lighting supports gameplay readability and environmental storytelling.
