Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably within the middle market segment.
- Strong underwriting expertise across Property, General Liability, Commercial Auto, Umbrella, and Workers' Compensation.
- Experience underwriting risks within industries such as manufacturing, retail, wholesale, hospitality, and other commercial sectors.
- Established broker relationships within Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, or surrounding Midwest markets are highly preferred.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills with the ability to evaluate complex commercial risks.
- Strong communication and relationship-building abilities to effectively manage brokers and internal stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and insurance underwriting platforms such as ReferenceConnect and ImageRight.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
- Professional insurance designations (or active pursuit of industry certifications) are considered an asset.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within the assigned territory as needed.
Responsibilities
- Lead underwriting activities for an assigned middle market territory, making sound risk selection and pricing decisions within delegated authority.
- Build, manage, and strengthen relationships with brokers and agency partners to drive profitable new business and retention.
- Develop and execute territory strategies, including broker planning, pipeline development, budgeting, and production forecasting.
- Evaluate commercial insurance submissions across multiple lines, ensuring profitability and alignment with underwriting guidelines.
- Manage and grow a profitable renewal portfolio while identifying opportunities for new business expansion.
- Monitor agency performance, analyze production results, and collaborate with partners to achieve business objectives.
- Represent the organization at industry events, networking opportunities, and broker meetings to enhance market visibility.
- Collaborate with internal teams to support cross-selling initiatives and deliver comprehensive insurance solutions.
- Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and participate in ongoing training, projects, and process improvements.
