- Exceptional news judgment and the ability to make independent, consequential editorial decisions.
- Superior rewriting and editing capabilities for headlines, leads, and complex narratives.
- Strong expertise in U.S. political, legal, and cultural dynamics.
- Demonstrated experience handling sensitive and legally complex journalism.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to provide constructive feedback in a high-pressure newsroom environment.
Responsibilities
- Direct U.S. news desk operations during peak hours, prioritizing and framing top-tier coverage.
- Execute aggressive rewrites of headlines, leads, and story structures to ensure analytical value and clarity.
- Perform hands-on reporting and fact-checking on high-stakes or sensitive stories.
- Mentor junior reporters and editors to elevate editorial output and critical thinking.
- Collaborate with audience teams to align editorial strategy with performance objectives.
- Maintain constant monitoring of competitive news coverage to ensure Newsweek outperforms the pack.
