Requirements
- PhD in energy systems, environmental policy, geography, data science, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience designing and executing interdisciplinary or mixed-methods research.
- Proficiency in a scripting language (Python preferred; R or Julia acceptable).
- Strong research design, statistical analysis, and scientific writing skills.
- Ability to translate technical findings for non-expert audiences.
- Demonstrated commitment to justice and public-interest research.
- Familiarity with emissions accounting, energy-systems analysis, and corporate-disclosure research.
- Experience with GIS and community-based research collaborations.
- Familiarity with the AI landscape, tech policy, and environmental justice.
- Familiarity with version control and git/GitHub.
- Ability to work in a stationary position and operate a computer for long periods.
Responsibilities
- Scope, design, and conduct research on the energy demand, emissions, and justice implications of AI-driven data center expansion.
- Compile and analyze data on electricity demand from AI workloads and power sources for data center hubs.
- Analyze corporate sustainability reports, SEC filings, energy procurement contracts, and industry lobbying efforts.
- Conduct discourse analysis to identify greenwashing narratives in tech industry communications.
- Use GIS to map data center locations, energy infrastructure, and environmental justice indicators.
- Author research reports, factsheets, and peer-reviewed papers on the AI–Fossil Fuel Nexus.
- Map regulatory loopholes and outdated grid rules enabling greenwashing.
- Present research findings to scientific audiences, policymakers, and affected communities.
- Draft blog posts, op-eds, and infographics to communicate technical findings to non-expert audiences.
- Act as a UCS spokesperson on AI–energy issues and engage with media outlets.
