Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training.
- At least two years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital.
- Certification as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and electronic health records (EHR).
Responsibilities
- Analyzes inpatient cases and assigns ICD-10 diagnostic and PCS procedural codes.
- Ensures accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignments.
- Utilizes critical thinking to evaluate documentation and issues coding queries to providers.
- Monitors work queues to ensure timely billing.
- Reviews medical records to extract pertinent information for code assignments.
- Complies with AHIMA ethical coding standards and HIPAA regulations.
- Maintains proficiency via ongoing education and participates in meetings regarding DRG mismatches.
