Requirements

  • Have designed, built, and operated complex back-end systems in production, from architecture through delivery.
  • Bring back-end language experience; PHP or Go is preferred, while Java and other back-end languages are also welcome.
  • Be able to work comfortably across programming languages.
  • Have written technical design documents and led architecture decisions, explaining why an approach is preferable to alternatives.
  • Have mentored other engineers.
  • Have shipped front-end work in JavaScript; React experience is preferred.
  • Have English fluency in speaking, reading, and writing for daily collaboration, technical discussions, and documentation.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Nice to have: experience migrating a legacy service to a new stack.
  • Nice to have: experience building in-app guidance or survey products.
  • Nice to have: experience with real-time, client-side experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the back-end service that stores user progress, guides, and survey data.
  • Lead large cross-team strategic initiatives.
  • Clarify product requirements with the product manager and designer, and write design documents explaining the recommended approach and trade-offs.
  • Break approved designs into delivery plans in Jira and deliver projects across infrastructure, back-end services, the JavaScript guides snippet, and the React-based editor.
  • Create test plans and acceptance scenarios for project delivery.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, triage issues, and debug across client and server.
  • Mentor engineers and improve code review and engineering workflows in GitHub.
  • Run proofs of concept for new technology and partner with staff engineers on company-wide initiatives.
  • Use AI tools for design, coding, code review, debugging, and test planning, and help shape AI-driven customer features.
