Requirements

  • Bring 10+ years of software or infrastructure engineering experience delivering complex platform solutions.
  • Have 6+ years of hands-on experience operating production Kubernetes at scale, ideally EKS on AWS.
  • Demonstrate deep EKS and Kubernetes internals expertise, including upgrades, node lifecycle, scheduling, and autoscaling.
  • Have strong AWS cloud-native architecture experience with EC2, VPC, IAM, and EKS.
  • Be proficient with Terraform and a GitOps or pipeline-driven delivery model such as ArgoCD or kube-applier.
  • Have expert-level proficiency in Go or Python.
  • Demonstrate a track record building production-grade Kubernetes controllers, operators, and platform tooling used by other engineering teams.
  • Have experience automating Kubernetes operations at fleet scale, including provisioning, upgrades, node lifecycle, self-healing, and policy enforcement.
  • Understand workload reliability patterns, including resource tuning, probes, PDBs, topology, and isolation constraints.
  • Have experience designing and enforcing platform standards through admission control, OPA/Gatekeeper, or equivalent policy frameworks.
  • Be able to define SLOs, build metrics, logs, and alerting coverage, and run data-driven baseline audits.
  • Demonstrate cross-functional collaboration, technical leadership, mentorship, and the ability to enforce standards across teams without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and evolve Affirm’s EKS platform, including cluster lifecycle, node management, and shared cluster components.
  • Lead standardized cluster provisioning, upgrades, and teardown using Terraform, Spacelift, and self-service workflows.
  • Own the reliability of shared fleet components and the CI/CD pipeline that ships them.
  • Define and enforce workload safety standards for resource configuration, isolation, disruption tolerance, and Karpenter consolidation.
  • Build automation and enforcement paths to move platform standards from onboarding through policy-enforced defaults.
  • Establish observability, baseline audits, and reporting to identify hot spots and measure risk mitigation.
  • Partner with cluster-user teams to understand workload needs and shape the platform.
  • Drive cost and capacity strategy across node scaling, bin packing, and EC2 instance selection.
  • Mentor engineers and participate in on-call, Kubernetes issue triage, and production incident response.
