Requirements

  • Have 7+ years of experience in lien resolution, subrogation, or settlement negotiation, preferably in a personal injury or plaintiff-side environment.
  • Have 3+ years of experience managing or leading a team.
  • Demonstrate a record of securing significant lien reductions across multiple lien types.
  • Have working knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid recovery, including ERISA self-funded versus fully insured plans.
  • Understand state lien laws and made-whole and common-fund doctrines.
  • Bring strong negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Be proficient with case management software and Excel or comparable reporting tools.
  • JD, paralegal certification, or equivalent legal training is preferred.
  • Experience in a high-volume personal injury firm or lien resolution company is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical billing, CPT/ICD coding, PIP statutes, and reasonable-value analysis is preferred.
  • Experience building or scaling a lien department is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate reductions on medical provider, hospital, health insurer, ERISA, Medicare, Medicaid, and other subrogation liens, as well as pre-settlement funding loans.
  • Develop reduction strategies based on lien type, governing law, case value, policy limits, and procurement-cost principles.
  • Handle high-dollar, contested, or escalated lien matters and partner with attorneys on settlement evaluation, demand, and mediation strategy.
  • Hire, train, manage, and mentor lien negotiators and support staff; set performance goals and track department metrics.
  • Build standardized workflows, scripts, templates, and escalation protocols.
  • Oversee lien identification and verification, flag potential missing liens, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and accounting requirements.
  • Work with finance on settlement statements, lien holds, and timely disbursement; maintain negotiation and payoff documentation.
  • Manage relationships with providers, health plans, recovery vendors, and government agencies, and report department performance, trends, and risks to firm leadership.
  • Maintain lien data in the case management system and identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
