- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5-7+ years of underwriting experience.
- At least 3 years of experience underwriting Middle Market accounts.
- 5+ years of experience driving agency relationships that result in profitable new and renewal business.
- Ability to apply advanced underwriting concepts, including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage implications, and loss analysis.
- Knowledge of pricing components and rating methodology.
- Ability to analyze financial, competitive, market, and portfolio information for underwriting and pricing decisions.
- May specialize or certify in one or more industry segments.
- Ability to exercise judgment and make business decisions within delegated authority.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects.
Responsibilities
- Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts aligned with Human Services underwriting appetite and mix goals.
- Apply underwriting concepts to assess risk selection, exposures, hazards, coverage implications, and loss analysis.
- Use underwriting tools, guidelines, pricing components, rating methodology, and CAT aggregation knowledge to make risk decisions.
- Manage an assigned portfolio against premium, profitability, rate, retention, industry and line-of-business mix, and growth goals.
- Review portfolio metrics and market trends to identify opportunities and support profitable growth with agents.
- Prepare or analyze information on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, requirements, status, and declinations.
- Build agency relationships, profile agency business, and market company capabilities to agents.
- Pipeline, negotiate, and close accounts; implement territory business plans and monitor performance.
- Make sales presentations to agents and customers, engaging internal partners to support complex accounts.
- Keep current on state and territory issues, regulations, and trends and use market and competitor information to support agent relationships.
