Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience designing, developing, and operating large-scale backend or platform systems in production.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex technical initiatives from architecture and implementation through rollout and ongoing operations.
  • Strong expertise in distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, high-volume APIs, asynchronous processing, event-driven systems, and idempotent workflows.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages such as Go, Java, or Python.
  • Production experience with both relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience operating mission-critical services, including on-call ownership, service-level objectives or error budgets, performance optimization, incident management, and post-incident reviews.
  • Demonstrated professional experience using AI-assisted development tools.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence technical direction.
  • Deep familiarity with asynchronous workflows and event-driven architectures such as Kafka or Pub/Sub.
  • Experience integrating diverse internal services and external partners including ownership of API contracts and data models.
  • Experience building or evolving multi-tenant and extensible platforms.
  • Strong observability and reliability engineering knowledge including tracing, metrics, alerting, circuit breaking, and chaos testing.
  • Understanding of secure-by-default service design, tokenization, secrets management, PCI requirements, and PII protection.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex, multi-team engineering initiatives that improve the reliability, scalability, correctness, and operational performance of a large-scale Orders platform.
  • Define and drive technical strategy for the complete order lifecycle, including order state models, service contracts, guarantees, and data integrity requirements.
  • Architect and evolve event-driven, idempotent workflows supporting order creation, updates, cancellations, substitutions, payments, refunds, and other critical commerce operations.
  • Establish clear system invariants, observability practices, and auditable histories across distributed services.
  • Partner with engineering teams across Payments, Fulfillment, Catalog, Fraud and Identity, Data, Infrastructure, and other domains to develop reusable platform capabilities.
  • Modernize platform architecture through improved consistency models, multi-tenant abstractions, failure isolation, secure integrations, and enhanced operability.
  • Design secure, policy-driven platform capabilities that enable automated and agentic commerce workflows.
  • Develop APIs and tools that allow AI systems and agents to interact with order workflows safely, reliably, and measurably.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews, technical spikes, launches, and cross-team engineering efforts.
  • Contribute hands-on to critical code paths while providing technical guidance and coaching to other engineers.
