Requirements

  • 9+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Several years of experience supervising interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Proven experience conducting applied policy research and working with mixed methods.
  • Subject matter expertise in current criminal legal systems and policy, particularly in California.
  • Strong understanding of relevant administrative datasets and sources.
  • Commitment to racial equity.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and oversee all aspects of Vera California research in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Supervise, support, and mentor research staff, including leading recruitment efforts.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator on projects, managing IRB applications and ensuring ethical standards.
  • Lead data collection and analysis, overseeing mixed methods research and data management.
  • Represent the research portfolio externally, including providing testimony, media outreach, and participating in coalitions.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to develop research-informed advocacy and communication strategies.
  • Collaborate on annual planning, program development, and fundraising.
