Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- 7–10 years of experience in communications, media relations, public affairs, or rapid-response communications, ideally within legal, advocacy, nonprofit, or public policy environments.
- At least 3 years of experience managing or mentoring communications professionals.
- Demonstrated success securing earned media placements and executing high-volume communications campaigns under tight deadlines.
- Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling, and editorial judgment with experience producing publication-ready content.
- Strong understanding of media strategy, crisis communications, spokesperson preparation, and journalist relationship management.
- Experience using media monitoring and analytics platforms such as Meltwater, Cision, or Muck Rack.
- Experience with collaboration tools including Salesforce, Asana, Slack, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
- Outstanding communication, organizational, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work Pacific Time core hours and travel occasionally for meetings or organizational events.
Responsibilities
- Lead rapid-response communications by monitoring news developments, preparing timely statements, coordinating media outreach, and supporting spokesperson activation during high-profile events.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists while identifying opportunities for earned media coverage across national, regional, and industry publications.
- Draft, edit, and oversee external communications including press releases, media advisories, op-eds, talking points, executive messaging, and public statements.
- Collaborate with legal, advocacy, and leadership teams to translate complex issues into clear, engaging, and accurate communications for diverse audiences.
- Develop and refine media strategies, analyze media performance, monitor industry trends, and provide insights to strengthen communications initiatives.
- Prepare executives and organizational representatives for interviews, media appearances, and public speaking engagements through messaging support and coaching.
- Supervise and mentor communications staff, establish team priorities, improve operational processes, and foster a collaborative, high-performing environment.
