Requirements
- Have 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years managing engineers directly.
- Have developed another leader, such as a manager who reported to you or an engineer grown into a tech lead or EM role with real accountability.
- Have a track record of shipping mission-critical software to production and owning it after launch.
- Have experience owning team prioritization and estimation, including explaining decisions to defer or decline work.
- Have experience giving direct developmental feedback and supporting someone through underperformance.
- Be currently shipping, or have recently shipped, production code in backend (Ruby, Python, etc.), web frontends (React), iOS, or Android.
- Have enough breadth to follow technical discussions across the other listed stack layers and critically review architecture decisions.
- Be comfortable with an expert-generalist team model and able to identify its risks and opportunities.
- Have hands-on experience directing AI agents through real-world production changes and a considered view of where they help or create rework.
- Understand CI/CD, logging, monitoring, and telemetry well enough to assess a squad's operational practices.
- Have excellent written communication.
Responsibilities
- Own the member experience for AI-supported coaching between sessions and determine where it hands off to a human coach.
- Own delivery across multiple squads, including sprint shaping, prioritization, backlog grooming, and estimation.
- Improve squad cycle time while maintaining quality and explain changes in delivery speed.
- Ship production work on directly managed squads and review architecture and support incidents across other squads.
- Partner with Product Strategists to align product scope and engineering delivery.
- Develop engineering managers and support the health of their squads.
- Plan future headcount, skill mix, and onboarding for an agent-heavy codebase.
- Define, teach, and measure AI engineering standards across squads.
- Identify and resolve engineering-wide problems that lack a clear owner.
