Requirements
- Have strong Java development experience, ideally in enterprise environments and complex existing systems.
- Have hands-on experience developing, maintaining, refactoring, and modernizing Java applications.
- Have at least 3 months of hands-on Copilot experience as the primary AI code-generation tool within a team project, or at least 6 months of practical experience with comparable AI coding tools.
- Comparable tools named in the posting include Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Antigravity.
- Have practical experience with shared, structured AI development workflows, particularly reverse engineering and/or Spec-Driven Development (SDD).
- Have hands-on experience using AI-assisted workflows for test generation.
- Have practical experience refactoring existing Java systems to remove or replace legacy dependencies.
- Be able to understand and navigate unfamiliar, complex codebases.
- Have software engineering fundamentals including clean code, automated testing, version control, and collaborative development practices.
- Have strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical teams and stakeholders.
- Java 17 and Java 21 experience is a nice-to-have.
- Experience with SQL relational databases and familiarity with NoSQL databases are nice-to-haves.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and reverse-engineer existing Java systems, including their architecture, dependencies, business logic, and technical constraints.
- Use AI-assisted development tools for code generation, analysis, refactoring, testing, and documentation.
- Apply structured AI development approaches, including reverse engineering and Spec-Driven Development.
- Refactor and modernize Java applications, including removing or replacing legacy dependencies and outdated components.
- Generate and improve automated tests to support safe modernization and refactoring.
- Collaborate with engineering teams and stakeholders to translate requirements and existing system behavior into maintainable technical solutions.
- Help establish repeatable AI-assisted development practices across engineering teams.
- Maintain code quality, maintainability, testing, and software engineering best practices.
