Requirements
- Have at least 4 to 7 years of experience managing state or local advocacy or policy.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Demonstrate policy monitoring, research and analysis skills.
- Have experience planning and implementing advocacy campaigns.
- Bring relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and follow-through.
- Use Microsoft Suite.
- LEED Green Associate or LEED AP certification is preferred, or willingness to obtain LEED GA within 12 months.
- Experience communicating about public policy issues and working across multiple jurisdictions or with nonprofit or government entities is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine state and local advocacy strategies for USGBC and LEED, and lead implementation of approved strategies and priority projects.
- Track, analyze and respond to green building policy developments in legislatures, agencies and local governments.
- Represent USGBC in advocacy coalitions, policy roundtables and strategic forums.
- Build relationships with state and local policymakers and USGBC allies.
- Educate elected officials and agency staff through meetings, briefings, events and lobbying efforts.
- Facilitate government officials’ participation in USGBC events, including LEED tours and plaque ceremonies.
- Develop subject matter expertise and contribute to policy briefs and articles.
- Coordinate with internal teams and contracted consultants to monitor and respond to policy threats and opportunities.
- Work with the Communications Director on policy-related content and support public relations activities and events as a local spokesperson.
- Support the team’s federal policy activities in assigned states as requested.
