Requirements
- Have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Have 8+ years of full-time software engineering experience.
- Have built and operated large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Have led substantial technical initiatives across teams, defining problems, aligning partners, and delivering solutions through ambiguity.
- Have experience designing reliable, low-latency backend systems, such as search infrastructure, retrieval services, event-driven systems, or streaming data pipelines.
- Have hands-on experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, Redis or Valkey, and Kafka or similar streaming systems.
- Understand recommendation systems, including candidate generation, ranking, and feature serving.
- Be able to partner effectively with machine learning engineers.
- Have experience mentoring engineers and improving design, code, and operational practices.
- Be committed to hands-on engineering, including writing code, documenting architectural decisions, and driving alignment.
Responsibilities
- Design and evolve search and serving infrastructure that performs reliably through live shopping traffic spikes.
- Build retrieval systems that let feed and search teams add candidate sources safely and quickly.
- Partner with ranking and machine learning engineers to bring models and features into production with the required latency and freshness.
- Set technical direction for Discovery Platform and influence partner-team roadmaps using data and product outcomes.
- Own complex systems from architecture and implementation through production operations and on-call.
- Contribute hands-on engineering work, participate in design and code reviews, and mentor engineers.
