Requirements

  • Have strong backend engineering experience building and owning reporting and analytics API services and serving-layer infrastructure.
  • Have experience designing API boundary layers, including endpoint design, versioning, and contract stability.
  • Have strong expertise designing performant read-heavy systems, including relational database optimisation, indexing, materialised views, caching, and API performance tuning.
  • Have solid SQL and non-SQL database fundamentals, strong SQL querying skills, and deep Kafka expertise.
  • Have deep experience with a JVM-based language.
  • Have experience with AWS or GCP and Kubernetes.
  • Be familiar with configuring, deploying, and operating containerised applications in a Kubernetes environment.
  • Have experience at the boundary between data systems and product backend services.
  • Be able to work quickly and independently in a hands-on delivery role.
  • Have experience in fintech, payments, or other regulated product environments.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own clean, versioned, performant Data API endpoints for internal dashboards, customer-facing features, and third-party tools.
  • Design and optimise Postgres read models, indexes, and caching strategies for low-latency query performance.
  • Integrate the serving layer with Pleo’s Kotlin-based product backend services.
  • Monitor services, respond to incidents, and define appropriate SLOs for customer-facing infrastructure.
  • Partner with Data Engineers to define contracts between ingestion and aggregation layers and the serving database.
  • Work with the Authorization team to secure APIs using authentication and authorization protocols.
  • Build a near-real-time service that aggregates data across Pleo services.
  • Design metadata, lineage, and governance capabilities for an explainable and auditable serving layer.
  • Own access control and permission management, including row- and column-level data access and audit trails.
