Requirements
- Have 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Bring deep expertise in at least one relevant area: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Demonstrate strong SQL proficiency and production experience using PostgreSQL as an application database.
- Be able to write and tune queries and reason about schema design, indexes, and query plans.
- Have hands-on data streaming and event-processing experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis, or an equivalent.
- Be proficient in Julia or Python.
- Have experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments.
- Be familiar with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
- Have a track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including in asynchronous and remote-friendly environments.
- Have a self-directed approach and a track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams.
- Have experience with, or interest in, using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production.
- For the Datastore Systems focus, be experienced with GraphQL and TypeScript or JavaScript (Node.js), and designing event-driven pipelines end to end.
- For the PostgreSQL and Data Modeling focus, be experienced with PostgreSQL query planning, schema design, schema evolution under load, and operating PostgreSQL in production.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex projects and systems within the Datastore.
- Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse.
- Partner with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and development and support teams to translate requirements into integrations, services, and platform solutions.
- Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries.
- Draft RFCs and lead complex feature discovery and technical design.
- Plan individual and team work, balancing speed, generalizability, technical debt, and stakeholder needs.
- Teach and mentor engineers and provide actionable feedback.
- Improve Datastore robustness and usability through documentation, tools, and dashboards.
