Requirements
- Have 6+ years of engineering experience working on complex, data-driven systems or applications.
- Have expert-level understanding of Python, SQL, Jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems.
- Be deeply informed about industry trends in data processing, databases, and performant data architectures.
- Have experience working in a remote-first team.
- Have strong communication skills in a remote-first team context.
- Be able to work on highly complex codebases and design abstractions that improve correctness and developer productivity.
- Bring an interest in investigating system performance at fine-grained timescales.
- Align engineering decisions with business and product goals while balancing velocity and engineering excellence.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain the core compute platform for code execution, SQL querying, and data processing across the Hex application.
- Use DuckDB to enable data interoperability between Python and SQL code written by users or AI agents.
- Build caching systems to speed up customer data queries.
- Implement a graph-based dependency framework to optimize multi-step execution plans.
- Instrument complex, multi-language systems to identify performance bottlenecks.
- Build product visualizations that help users understand the performance characteristics of their code.
- Work across backend data systems and the collaborative notebook interface.
