Requirements
- Advanced degree (PhD or >1 MS preferred) in a hard-science or engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated breadth across multiple natural science fields such as biosecurity, microbiology, physics, chemistry, or systems engineering.
- 5+ years of relevant research or applied experience with a track record of running independent projects.
- Substantive familiarity with adversarial environments and reasoning, such as red-teaming, defense analysis, or safety engineering.
- Ability to reason about hazards that lack robust historical data.
- Strong publication record or body of work on technological risk, resilience, or detection science.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-specialist audiences.
- Strong understanding of modern AI capabilities and their impact on threat landscapes.
- Systems thinking and comfort with working under uncertainty.
- Self-directed work style with high judgment for high-leverage problems.
Responsibilities
- Conduct structured horizon-scanning for novel AI-enabled hazard classes and develop methodologies for reasoning about threats with limited historical data.
- Investigate next-generation detection sciences, such as adaptive pathogen surveillance and emerging hazard modalities.
- Pursue feasibility analyses on deep resilience and lifeline capacities for scenarios where conventional infrastructure is compromised.
- Analyze biosphere-scale vulnerabilities including geoengineering, synthetic microbes, and non-traditional environmental toxicology.
- Identify and advance defensive and transparency-enhancing technologies to shift the offense-defense balance.
- Develop scientific metaresearch to aggregate evidence and translate findings for policymakers and technical audiences.
- Build scientific coordination capacity through standards, convenings, and cross-border working relationships.
- Co-author grant applications, build analytical tools for risk visualization, and provide decision support for frontline responders.
