Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Degree in law and active license to practice in an EMEA or Americas jurisdiction.
  • Substantial senior in-house experience in a global technology or software business.
  • Proven experience leading a distributed legal team and managing managers across regions.
  • Track record of setting high performance standards and developing talent.
  • Experience building or restructuring an in-house legal function.
  • Experience negotiating commercial technology contracts including enterprise software, subscriptions, and cloud services.
  • Technical familiarity with open source licensing, including permissive and copyleft licenses.
  • Demonstrable experience or readiness for public company governance, listing preparation, and board support.
  • Depth in at least two areas: data protection, IP/trademark, export controls, competition, or disputes.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent drafting and presentation skills.
  • Available for international travel two to four times a year for up to two weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the global Legal and Compliance function, setting structure, standards, and priorities.
  • Build and manage a distributed team across EMEA and the Americas, developing managers and setting performance objectives.
  • Establish the function's operating cadence, including intake processes and service expectations.
  • Manage public-market readiness, including corporate governance, entity structure, and disclosure controls.
  • Advise the CEO, COO, CFO, and Board on legal, regulatory, and governance matters.
  • Own the commercial contracting framework, including templates, negotiating positions, and escalation processes.
  • Drive intellectual property and open source licensing strategy for products like Ubuntu.
  • Direct the global compliance program, covering data protection, export controls, anti-bribery, and AI regulation.
  • Manage litigation, regulatory engagement, and external counsel panel budgets.
