Requirements
- 5+ years building and operating highly scalable distributed systems or observability infrastructure.
- 5+ years programming in Go, Python, Java/Kotlin, or TypeScript/Node.js.
- Experience building internal platforms or developer tooling (e.g., Backstage).
- Hands-on depth across metrics, logs, and distributed tracing on major observability platforms.
- Practical experience with OpenTelemetry (collectors, instrumentation, semantic conventions).
- Experience building high-volume data or telemetry pipelines and time-series backends.
- Strong REST API and integration engineering skills including OAuth and webhooks.
- Advanced AWS and Kubernetes expertise delivered through Terraform and GitOps.
- Demonstrated technical teaching experience through workshops, documentation, or internal courses.
- 6+ months of professional experience leveraging AI to enhance engineering productivity.
- Track record of leading large projects autonomously and decomposing ambiguous problems.
- Computer Science degree, Engineering degree, or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
- Design and ship end-to-end capability for metrics, logs, distributed traces, and events across multiple regions and environments.
- Build for internal engineering users with published interfaces, versioned client libraries, and platform SLOs.
- Drive instrumentation with OpenTelemetry, maintaining shared libraries, collector deployments, and sampling strategies.
- Engineer high-volume telemetry pipelines with reliability, backpressure handling, and tiered retention.
- Integrate the observability toolchain with CI/CD, service catalog, incident management, and automated remediation systems.
- Implement SLOs, error budgets, and golden-signal alerting as code to improve system reliability.
- Build the 'golden path' for instrumenting services, including templates and CI checks that catch malformed telemetry.
- Apply AI tooling to improve engineering productivity and instrument Smartsheet’s AI systems.
