Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure.
- Deep expertise in at least one of: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and PostgreSQL for application databases, including query tuning and schema design.
- Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python.
- Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js).
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments using Kubernetes and IaC tools like Terraform or Helm.
- Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team processes, tooling, or documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for asynchronous work.
- Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex projects and systems within the Datastore, weighing implementation trade-offs.
- Partner with product managers, scientific stakeholders, and engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable data platform solutions.
- Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries.
- Draft RFCs to lead technical design phases and align teams on development decisions.
- Plan individual and team work, balancing speed, generalizability, and technical debt.
- Mentor other engineers and act as a coordination point for engineering practices.
- Improve operational robustness and ease of use through new documentation, tools, and dashboards.
