Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Extensive professional experience in reliability engineering, systems engineering, or a closely related discipline within the energy or utility sector.
  • Strong understanding of protection and control systems, grid-edge devices, substation automation, and utility-grade embedded or software solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with reliability engineering methodologies, tools, and standards such as ReliaSoft, ISO 9001, ISO 55000, and IEC 61025.
  • Familiarity with transmission and distribution communication protocols and standards, including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and IEEE C37.118.
  • Strong analytical and statistical capabilities, with experience using data analysis tools such as Python, R, Minitab, or Power BI.
  • Demonstrated experience with reliability modeling, failure analysis, FMEA/FMECA, root cause analysis, and reliability testing.
  • Familiarity with model-based design and hardware-in-the-loop testing, including technologies such as RTDS, PSCAD, or EMTP.
  • Experience working directly with utilities on product deployments, failure investigations, asset performance programs, or reliability strategies.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity risks and reliability considerations affecting critical energy infrastructure.
  • Master's degree in Reliability Engineering or Systems Engineering is an asset.
  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) certification or equivalent is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement reliability strategies across the lifecycle of embedded hardware and software products used in transmission and distribution applications.
  • Perform reliability modeling, statistical analysis, and predictive assessments to evaluate field performance and inform product design and engineering decisions.
  • Develop and execute reliability test strategies, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), environmental, stress, and other validation testing for grid automation components.
  • Lead FMEA, FMECA, root cause analysis, and failure investigations across hardware, software, embedded systems, and communication layers.
  • Partner with product design, systems engineering, and software teams to integrate Design for Reliability principles from concept development through deployment.
  • Analyze field data from deployed protection relays, RTUs, control systems, and other grid devices to identify systemic issues and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate directly with utilities and customers on asset performance, reliability improvement, and grid modernization initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain product reliability KPIs such as MTBF, FIT rates, availability, and other indicators.
  • Identify opportunities to implement predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies using remote diagnostics, SCADA, and sensor data.
  • Monitor regulatory, industry, and cybersecurity requirements affecting the reliability of utility assets and critical infrastructure.
