Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three years of professional coding experience.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification accredited by AAPC.
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or CCS-P certification accredited by AHIMA.
- Advanced knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPC, and coding conventions.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Understanding of CMS guidelines, NCCI, and MUE edits.
- Proficiency with Microsoft software, internet navigation, and database management.
- Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
- Strong professional communication skills.
- Previous electronic health record (EHR) experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Abstract information from service documentation and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCs codes.
- Code surgical procedures in accordance with established surgical coding guidelines.
- Monitor and resolve coding-related billing denials.
- Communicate documentation deficiencies to providers, practice management, and stakeholders.
- Ensure documentation meets E/M guidelines, Teaching Physician rules, and payer-specific requirements.
- Collaborate with coding leads or supervisors to assist in training and mentoring staff.
- Participate in special projects and meet production and quality standards.
