Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years of professional coding experience.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification accredited by AAPC.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or CCS-P certification accredited by AHIMA.
  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPC, and coding conventions.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Understanding of CMS guidelines, NCCI, and MUE edits.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft software, internet navigation, and database management.
  • Ability to work independently with limited oversight.
  • Strong professional communication skills.
  • Previous electronic health record (EHR) experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Abstract information from service documentation and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCs codes.
  • Code surgical procedures in accordance with established surgical coding guidelines.
  • Monitor and resolve coding-related billing denials.
  • Communicate documentation deficiencies to providers, practice management, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure documentation meets E/M guidelines, Teaching Physician rules, and payer-specific requirements.
  • Collaborate with coding leads or supervisors to assist in training and mentoring staff.
  • Participate in special projects and meet production and quality standards.
