Requirements
- CPC or CCS certification required.
- 3–5 years of multispecialty coding experience.
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Thorough knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities combined with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when working with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with coding updates.
Responsibilities
- Assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures for professional and facility services across multiple medical specialties.
- Review physician notes, operative reports, diagnostic reports, and other clinical documentation to identify all information required for accurate coding.
- Abstract relevant patient information from medical records for data entry, reporting, and statistical purposes.
- Identify unclear, incomplete, or inconsistent documentation and communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers to obtain clarification.
- Apply current coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and payer-specific rules to ensure accurate and compliant coding.
- Participate in coding audits and contribute feedback and recommendations to improve coding quality and processes.
- Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to investigate and resolve coding-related denials and claim rejections.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
- Keep coding knowledge current through continuing education, professional development, and monitoring of industry and regulatory changes.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to less experienced coders when needed.
