Requirements

  • CPC or CCS certification required.
  • 3–5 years of multispecialty coding experience.
  • Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Thorough knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities combined with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when working with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with coding updates.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures for professional and facility services across multiple medical specialties.
  • Review physician notes, operative reports, diagnostic reports, and other clinical documentation to identify all information required for accurate coding.
  • Abstract relevant patient information from medical records for data entry, reporting, and statistical purposes.
  • Identify unclear, incomplete, or inconsistent documentation and communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers to obtain clarification.
  • Apply current coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and payer-specific rules to ensure accurate and compliant coding.
  • Participate in coding audits and contribute feedback and recommendations to improve coding quality and processes.
  • Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to investigate and resolve coding-related denials and claim rejections.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
  • Keep coding knowledge current through continuing education, professional development, and monitoring of industry and regulatory changes.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to less experienced coders when needed.
