Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Formal education in Health Information Management or a related field.
  • Active credential: CCS, RHIT, or RHIA.
  • Minimum of three (3) years performing inpatient coding in an acute hospital setting.
  • Proficiency in computer skills relating to coding software and EHR systems.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, IPPS coding, APR-DRG, MS-DRG.
  • Knowledge of coding audits, denials management, and documentation improvement.
  • Educated in medical terminology, disease process, anatomy and physiology, and surgical procedures.
  • Must pass an inpatient coding assessment prior to hiring.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes computerized encoder and other systems related to completing the coding process.
  • Applies coding processes across all facilities in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Prioritize and organize coding work activities to meet deadlines and organizational goals.
  • Maintain quality targets and production standards according to organization policies.
  • Accurately abstracting inpatient accounts for hospital reporting.
  • Adheres to official coding guidelines and standards of Ethical Coding.
  • Resolve coding and documentation issues related to reimbursement and compliance.
  • Identify physician query opportunities to clarify documentation.
  • Monitor and report documentation discrepancies.
