Required Skills
PostgreSQLPythonGrafanaPrometheusCI/CDTerraformAnsible

Requirements

  • Deep production PostgreSQL experience, including MVCC, vacuum and bloat, locking, physical and logical replication, and query planning.
  • Use infrastructure as code as the normal way of working, with version-controlled, reviewed changes.
  • Use CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure, database, and schema changes.
  • Have 5+ years running production databases as a DBRE, SRE, platform, or database engineer.
  • Have experience designing high availability and disaster recovery, including replication, automated failover, redundancy, and RTO/RPO/cost trade-offs.
  • Have a track record of zero-downtime changes, including online migrations, major-version upgrades, or moving data between clusters.
  • Understand application database use, including connection pools, ORMs, transaction scope, retries, idempotency, and safe deployment order.
  • Define observability measures, alert on SLOs, and verify changes with data.
  • Script in Python, Bash, or Go to automate operational work.
  • Be comfortable working in a regulated financial services environment with strict access control, encryption, and audit trails.
  • Partner with developers and communicate clearly while owning outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run highly available PostgreSQL across zones and regions, with automated, tested failover and fencing against split-brain.
  • Define database infrastructure as code and apply it through peer-reviewed CI/CD pipelines with drift detection.
  • Build self-service database provisioning for product teams.
  • Plan and execute migrations, upgrades, and table moves with zero or near-zero downtime.
  • Partner with developers on schema changes, queries, connection pooling, transaction scope, retries, and expand-and-contract migrations.
  • Define SLOs and build alerts and dashboards to detect latency and capacity problems.
  • Design backup and recovery, and conduct scheduled restore and failover tests measuring RTO and RPO.
  • Right-size database instances and storage while meeting requirements.
  • Secure data through least-privilege access, secrets management, encryption, audited access, and PII masking.
  • Lead and participate in incident response and on-call, write blameless post-mortems, and automate operational runbooks.
