Required Skills
PostgreSQLPythonGrafanaPrometheusCI/CDTerraformAnsible

Requirements

  • Bring deep production experience running PostgreSQL at scale, including MVCC, vacuum and bloat, locking, physical and logical replication, and query planning.
  • Have 5+ years running production databases as a DBRE, SRE, platform engineer, or database engineer.
  • Use infrastructure as code as a normal working practice, with changes version-controlled and reviewed before application.
  • Use CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and database changes, including schema migrations.
  • Have experience designing high availability and disaster recovery, including replication, automated failover, and multi-region or multi-cloud redundancy.
  • Have a track record of zero-downtime changes, such as online migrations, major-version upgrades, or moving data between clusters.
  • Understand application-database interactions, including connection pools, ORMs, transaction scope, retries, idempotency, and safe deployment order.
  • Define observability measures, alert on SLOs, and verify changes with data.
  • Script operational automation in Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Be comfortable working in a regulated financial services environment with access control, encryption, and audit trails.
  • Nice to have: Terraform, Ansible, production MySQL, Redshift, ClickHouse, DynamoDB, logical replication or CDC tooling, Kubernetes, Java services, Linux performance tuning, or Vault and other secrets managers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run highly available PostgreSQL across zones and regions, with automated, tested failover and fencing against split-brain.
  • Define database infrastructure as code and apply peer-reviewed changes through CI/CD pipelines with drift detection.
  • Build self-service database provisioning for product teams.
  • Plan and execute migrations, upgrades, and table moves with zero or near-zero downtime.
  • Partner with developers on schema changes, queries, connection pooling, transaction scope, retries, and expand-and-contract migrations.
  • Define SLOs and build SLO-based alerts and dashboards to identify latency and capacity problems.
  • Design backup and recovery, and verify them with scheduled restore and failover tests measuring RTO and RPO.
  • Secure data through least-privilege access, secrets management, encryption, audited access, and PII masking.
  • Participate in incident response and on-call, write blameless post-mortems, and follow through on actions.
