- Required Skills
- PostgreSQLKafkaKubernetesGoHelm
Requirements
- Have 8+ years of professional engineering experience, including several years running systems at real scale.
- Write Go, or have deep experience in another strongly typed language and be able to pick up Go quickly.
- Have architected production event streaming systems using Kafka or Redpanda, with depth in partitioning, consumer groups, rebalancing, retention, and delivery guarantees.
- Have delivered real-time data to clients at scale using WebSockets, SSE, or gRPC streaming, and handled fan-out, slow consumers, and backpressure in production.
- Have driven technical direction across team boundaries without formal authority.
- Have built or maintained libraries used by multiple teams and understand backward compatibility and deprecation.
- Have mentored senior engineers.
- Have depth in at least one adjacent area: identity and access, developer tooling and CI, or testing and resilience.
- Know Kubernetes beyond the basics, including writing Helm charts and understanding security best practices; have job experience or certifications to demonstrate this.
- Have worked with relational databases; PostgreSQL experience is used at Alpaca, though equivalent fundamentals are accepted.
- Have worked at a startup and be comfortable with ambiguity, changing priorities, and balancing technical debt with speed.
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture and two-to-three-year direction of the event streaming platform, including Redpanda, the UTS ecosystem, client libraries, and user-facing streaming.
- Lead the shift from batch processing to event-driven systems in partnership with the teams that own those systems.
- Design scalable user-facing streaming, addressing connection fan-out, slow consumers, backpressure, ordering, delivery guarantees, and failure modes.
- Set standards for event-driven design, including schema evolution, topic ownership, replay, and idempotency.
- Own shared libraries used by other teams, including versioning and deprecation.
- Shape authentication and authorization direction, including authorization for real-time subscriptions, token lifecycle on long-lived connections, and multi-tenant isolation.
- Partner with SRE on chaos testing and game days, and with QA on test tooling and pre-production gates.
- Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and guide work through influence across teams.
- Join the Platform on-call rotation and act as technical lead during shared-infrastructure incidents.
