Requirements
- Bring significant professional experience in backend software engineering.
- Have a proven record of designing, building, and scaling distributed systems.
- Be proficient in at least one modern backend language such as Ruby, Scala, Go, or Python; Ruby experience is particularly valued.
- Have a deep understanding of distributed systems, backend architecture, scalable service design, and production engineering.
- Know reliability and observability practices, including SLOs, metrics, alerting, telemetry, and distributed-system debugging.
- Demonstrate technical leadership, including setting architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and leading large-scale migrations or modernization initiatives.
- Write clean, maintainable, secure, and scalable production code.
- Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical designs and actionable engineering plans.
- Collaborate with senior Product, Design, Analytics, ML, Web, and Mobile stakeholders.
- Have experience improving reliability, latency, or throughput in large-scale distributed systems; experience with ML recommendation, personalization, or feed systems is a plus.
- Be familiar with experimentation and feature-flagging platforms.
Responsibilities
- Set backend technical direction through design documents, architecture reviews, and concrete solutions to ambiguous product requirements.
- Design, build, and evolve scalable backend services for web and mobile experiences, discoverability, personalization, experimentation, and content consumption.
- Own backend reliability and platform health across staging environments, CI/CD, databases, queues, infrastructure costs, observability, and operational performance.
- Establish reliability practices using service-level objectives, metrics, alerts, telemetry, and distributed-systems debugging.
- Raise engineering standards through code reviews, mentorship, pairing, knowledge sharing, and expectations for architecture, testing, security, and operations.
- Represent backend engineering in cross-team planning with Engineering, Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML teams.
- Modernize legacy systems, reduce technical debt, improve scalability, and increase engineering velocity.
- Partner with data and ML teams on backend capabilities for recommendations, personalization, experimentation, and consistent data experiences.
- Use metrics, analytics, and telemetry to identify trends, investigate anomalies, and inform technical priorities and product decisions.
