Requirements

  • Have 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
  • Be highly proficient in at least one relevant area: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
  • Have strong SQL proficiency and production experience using PostgreSQL as an application database; be able to tune queries and reason about schemas, indexes, and query plans.
  • Have hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis, or another cloud-based equivalent.
  • Be proficient in Julia or Python; Julia experience is a plus but is not required.
  • Have experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, with familiarity with Kubernetes and IaC tools such as Terraform or Helm.
  • Have a track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in asynchronous and remote-friendly environments.
  • Have a self-directed approach and a track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams.
  • Have experience with, or interest in, using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, with good judgment about guardrails.
  • For the Datastore Systems focus, be prepared to work with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js) and design event-driven pipelines end to end.
  • For the PostgreSQL and Data Modeling focus, be prepared to work on query planning, index selection, schema design and evolution, zero-downtime migrations, and PostgreSQL production operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and architecture for complex projects and systems within the Datastore, weighing trade-offs and supporting decisions with data.
  • Translate requirements from product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and other teams into integrations, services, and platform solutions.
  • Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries, including in codebases beyond the Datastore.
  • Implement features with attention to data integrity, design soundness, and maintainability.
  • Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design, incorporate input, and align teams on decisions.
  • Plan work and contribute to team planning, balancing speed, generalizability, technical debt, and stakeholder needs.
  • Teach and mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, and help coordinate engineering practices.
  • Improve the Datastore’s operational robustness and ease of use through documentation, tools, and dashboards.
  • Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse and collaborate on APIs that support new workflows.
