Requirements

  • Bring 6–10+ years of professional experience.
  • Have deep expertise with Ruby on Rails and the ability to craft solutions to complex problems.
  • Have deep expertise in ActiveRecord MySQL query optimization beyond standard ActiveRecord use.
  • Understand SQL execution and query optimization at the engine level.
  • Be able to read, understand, and improve complex application code across large systems.
  • Have experience tuning queries, adding indexes, and interpreting execution plans.
  • Be comfortable partnering with DBAs and technical teams to debug and resolve performance issues.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or have equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: familiarity with TiDB, Elasticache, Opensearch, or DynamoDB.
  • Preferred: experience moving a Rails application to TiDB and practical experience choosing between database technologies.
  • Preferred: experience with query analysis and performance tools such as Datadog, Looker, or K6.
  • Preferred: experience with large-scale data migrations and tools such as gh-ost, and familiarity with the AWS ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve slow ActiveRecord queries across the Rails monolith.
  • Optimize query performance through indexing, query rewriting, and schema improvements.
  • Collaborate with DBAs and technical teams to diagnose and remediate database bottlenecks.
  • Validate performance improvements through testing and measurement at high load.
  • Use Datadog to analyze query performance and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Implement selective caching in Redis where appropriate to reduce database load.
  • Document findings and share best practices for performant query design.
  • Contribute to performance and scalability efforts across MySQL, TiDB, Elasticache, and Opensearch.
