Requirements
- Have a track record leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives spanning design, delivery, and operations.
- Bring substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
- Have experience with ingestion pipelines, storage engines, query execution, or similar systems.
- Write clean, robust, performant software that others can maintain.
- Have strong Go skills or deep experience in other systems languages such as Rust, C, or C++.
- Have owned production services, carried a pager, and reduced operational toil.
- Treat SLOs as a product feature and break complex problems into short feedback loops.
- Lead through design documents, reviews, and shipped code, and communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
- Own the architecture of Tempo ingestion, storage, query, and metrics-generation components.
- Drive design reviews, make trade-offs across performance, cost, and complexity, and document technical decisions.
- Design structured, deterministic, discoverable APIs for products, assistants, and external integrators.
- Improve operational outcomes against SLOs through automation, parameterized rollouts, and actionable alerts.
- Partner with Product and sibling teams to understand Tempo consumers and deliver what unblocks them.
- Mentor engineers through code review, design feedback, and pairing on difficult problems.
- Participate in on-call, incident response, and post-incident learning.
- Engage the open-source community, review external contributions, and help steer Tempo.
