Requirements
- Be currently enrolled in law school.
- Complete the 1L year of law school before the internship begins; candidates who will have completed their 2L year are preferred.
- Have excellent research skills, including internet and legal database research.
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate attention to detail, organization, and time-management skills.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrate the initiative to see projects through to completion.
- Demonstrate commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, and racial justice.
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct complex legal analysis.
- Commit to 12 consecutive weeks at 10, 15, or 20 hours per week part-time, or 10 consecutive weeks at 35 hours per week full-time.
- Preferred: Experience drafting briefs before the United States Supreme Court.
- Preferred: Familiarity with or experience in Section 1983 litigation, immigration law, LGBTQ rights, free speech, administrative law, national security law, or structural constitutional law.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects.
- Assist in drafting legal memoranda, motions, and briefs.
- Support ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys.
- Develop arguments and contribute to long-term planning and strategy projects.
- Support the ACLU’s work across its Supreme Court docket.
- Gain exposure to advocacy strategy development and coalition management for cases pending before or possibly headed toward the U.S. Supreme Court.
