Requirements
- Be currently matriculated in law school.
- Complete 1L year before the internship begins; candidates who will have completed 2L year are preferred.
- Demonstrate excellent research skills, including internet and legal database research.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Have attention to detail and strong organization and time-management skills.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrate initiative in seeing projects through to completion.
- Show commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, and racial justice.
- Demonstrate ability to conduct complex legal analysis.
- Preferred: experience drafting briefs before the United States Supreme Court.
- Preferred: familiarity or experience with Section 1983 litigation, immigration law, LGBTQ rights, free speech, administrative law, national security law, or structural constitutional law.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support new and active litigation projects.
- Help develop arguments and draft legal memoranda, motions, and briefs.
- Provide support and assistance to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys.
- Contribute to long-term planning and strategy projects for the ACLU’s Supreme Court docket.
- Support advocacy strategy development and coalition management for cases pending before or possibly headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
