Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college coursework in Business, Finance, or related field preferred).
  • At least 5 years of recent mortgage industry experience with substantial underwriting background.
  • Current Direct Endorsement (DE) certification required.
  • Current SAR, VA, and Auto endorsements required for assigned regions.
  • Expert-level knowledge of mortgage lending, underwriting, and funding processes.
  • Expert-level understanding of mortgage documentation, including tax returns and financial statements.
  • Ability to evaluate data, draw sound conclusions, and assess risk with high independent judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and collaborative cloud-based platforms.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate mortgage loan documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with federal, agency, and internal requirements.
  • Underwrite conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, new construction, and condominium project loans.
  • Analyze debt-to-income, loan-to-value, credit reports, and financial statements to assess creditworthiness and detect fraud.
  • Verify accuracy of system inputs and ensure consistency with Automated Underwriting Systems (AUS).
  • Approve or deny loan applications based on regulatory requirements and risk factors.
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members regarding complex underwriting issues.
  • Collaborate with Loan Processors and Loan Officers to resolve documentation gaps.
