Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field.
- 3–7 years of experience in consumer and/or residential mortgage underwriting.
- Demonstrated experience with conventional and portfolio mortgage underwriting.
- Strong understanding of consumer lending products, residential mortgages, credit analysis, and financial statements.
- Knowledge of applicable lending regulations (TILA, RESPA, HMDA, Fair Lending, ATR/QM) and risk-management practices.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to interpret and spread financial documents.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Familiarity with Power BI or willingness to develop proficiency.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite consumer credit requests, including personal loans, auto loans, HELOCs, PLOCs, and cash-secured loans.
- Review credit reports, income, debt, assets, and repayment capacity to assess risk.
- Structure consumer loans and identify policy exceptions with supporting rationale.
- Underwrite portfolio residential mortgage and construction-to-permanent loan applications.
- Analyze tax returns, W-2s, bank statements, appraisals, and title reports.
- Identify fraud indicators, credit weaknesses, and emerging risks.
- Ensure loan decisions and documentation comply with TILA, RESPA, HMDA, Fair Lending, and ATR/QM standards.
- Collaborate with loan officers, credit administration, and closing teams.
