Requirements

  • 10+ years of significant experience in media relations, thought leadership, public affairs, or closely related communications functions.
  • Proven track record of building or substantially rebuilding a communications function, including hiring and managing people.
  • Recent hands-on experience personally producing or shaping high-quality communications work.
  • Exceptional communications judgment regarding audience, context, timing, substance, and reputational risk.
  • Experience advising executives and senior decision-makers on communications strategy and media engagement.
  • Strong understanding of how journalists, influential voices, and media channels shape perceptions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build meaningful external relationships and represent an organization publicly.
  • Intellectual curiosity to understand sophisticated research and complex subject matter.
  • Ability to work with substantial overlap with U.S. working hours.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to coordinate across teams and resolve disagreements.

Responsibilities

  • Set and execute the strategy for media relations, thought-leader engagement, online communities, public forums, events, and other earned communications opportunities.
  • Build and maintain high-trust relationships with journalists, editors, podcast hosts, event organizers, thought leaders, and other influential external stakeholders.
  • Identify, develop, and pitch substantive stories and thought-leadership initiatives to increase understanding of complex organizational work.
  • Manage inbound media engagement and rapid-response situations, including coordination with subject-matter experts regarding messaging and reputational risk.
  • Advise senior leadership on media opportunities, external relationships, and public engagement strategies.
  • Prepare executives and subject-matter experts for interviews, speaking engagements, and public appearances.
  • Serve as a spokesperson in selected interviews, events, and public forums.
  • Manage and develop an initial team of one or two communications professionals while building systems to scale the function.
